Too much debt

Several years ago I was involved with a group helping people who were struggling with debt. The clients were often people who through circumstances beyond their control and uninformed choices now found themselves unable to meet their financial commitments. These weren’t irresponsible people, they hadn’t spent extravagantly but they were now in over their heads and unable to get back on their feet. The loss of work, unexpected health costs, or a broken down car had been enough to force them to have to borrow and then the loan costs just kept on climbing.

It’s easy to think such a thing only happens to those who aren’t careful but the reality is that most New Zealanders live from pay packet to pay packet meaning the potential to find ourselves in debt is very real. All it takes is a partner to lose their job and suddenly life is very difficult. Financial insecurity puts huge stresses on the family and relationships.

What was so great about the group I worked with was when we saw people get their finances under control. Now there was light at the end of the tunnel – hope was restored, new possibilities emerged for them and their families.

This Sunday we have Benita Robinson from Christians Against Poverty speaking about the work they do helping people get out of debt. Benita will share with us how we can help those who are struggling.

Mainly Music -  Meets Wednesdays at 10.00am. We are currently on a break for the school holidays. We will recommence on the 5 May. This programme is a fun way for parents and their children to spend quality time together based around music and movement. It is a way for us as a church to connect with and offer something back to the community of which we are a part. It’s also a way for us to demonstrate care, concern and support for those with young children.

Small Groups are now up and running again. Contact the church office@pb.org.nz if you would like to join one

Oh and for those who are unable to join us we will still have an on-air service for you @10.30am and again @ 8pm on Thursday evening on Coast Access Radio 104.7FM or you can livestream at
