What does good leadership actually look like? Good leaders do not need to be the loudest person in the room or act as if the rules do not apply to them. They listen, share responsibility, welcome honest feedback, and use their influence to help the whole community. It is less about standing above people and more about standing alongside them.
Peter in his letter reminds us that being humble does not mean pretending we have nothing to offer. It simply means knowing our strengths without thinking they make us more important than anyone else. It means staying open to learning, owning our mistakes, and showing through our actions what good leadership can be.
We can all practise this at work, in our neighbourhoods, clubs, and whānau. Start by noticing who is being left out. Ask before making decisions. Give credit freely. Choose helping over getting noticed. These small choices build trust, keep power accountable, and make room for different voices. When we lead with humility, everyone gets a better chance to grow, contribute, and feel they belong.
