In Acts 2:42–47 we find a community transformed by the Holy Spirit, devoted to God and deeply committed to one another. Their faith was not merely expressed through worship and prayer; it was demonstrated through generosity, compassion, and justice.
Today, the word “justice” often carries political or cultural baggage. It is often associated with punishment, revenge, or demanding that others pay for wrongdoing. Biblical justice is something far richer and broader. It flows from the very character of God. Scripture presents justice as restoring what is broken, protecting the vulnerable, and ensuring that people are treated with dignity and fairness.
The prophets repeatedly challenged God's people to move beyond religious rituals to care for those in need. Isaiah called people to feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, and free the oppressed. Jesus echoed this concern, declaring that justice, mercy, and faithfulness are at the heart of faithful discipleship.
The early church lived this out. They shared their resources, cared for one another, and ensured that no one was left behind. Spirit-shaped justice led naturally to generosity.
As followers of Jesus today, we are invited to do the same - opening our hearts, our hands, and our lives so that God’s compassion can be seen in our communities.
