We live in a world overflowing with opinions, podcasts, influencers, and endless streams of information. Every day we are being formed by the voices we listen to and the stories we immerse ourselves in.
In Acts 2, the early church devoted themselves to “the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.” Their faith was intentional and transformative. Scripture was not simply information to study; it was a way of life that shaped their identity and actions.
History reminds us how easily Scripture can be misused. Thomas Jefferson famously created his own edited version of the Bible. The “Slave Bible” of the early 1800s deliberately omitted passages about freedom and justice to support slavery. Both examples reveal the danger of shaping Scripture around our preferences instead of allowing Scripture to shape us.
Scripture is meant to form our character, challenge our assumptions, and draw us into the story of God.
The early Christians paired Scripture with prayer. They listened not only to the teachings of Jesus but also to the guidance of the Holy Spirit as they learned how to live generously, care for the vulnerable, and build authentic community together.
What voices are shaping us most? Are we making space to hear God’s voice above the noise?
