The Humble King

Our world likes power and those who have power often like to use it to get their own way. We don’t have to look very far today to see how some of those who hold that power use it to bully others into giving them what they desire. Palm Sunday reminds us that true power is interested in serving others. As Uncle Ben says to Peter, in Spiderman, ‘With great power comes great responsibility’.

Palm Sunday tells us how the king and creator of the world chose to ride a donkey, a symbol of peace and service, rather than a conquering war horse. It was a statement to all those present that his kingdom was different to those kingdoms built on power and control. Here was a king who was prepared to get go of everything in order to save those who were in need. Just a few days later this king would lay down his life for all humanity.

I wonder how we treat the power we have, even if it is only a small amount. Do we use it to dominate or to serve?

Over the next few Sundays of lent as we head toward Easer we will be thinking about what it means to Worship in the Wilderness. Join us Sunday @ 10am.
