Learning to Lament

How do we respond when life turns sour and it seems as though God has left us at the very moment we most desperately need him? Sometimes we get angry, sometimes we sulk, sometimes we just give up. The people of God experienced wilderness events, times when it all seemed to have gone wrong. Psalm 13 is a Psalm of Lament and asks the question “Where are you God? How long will I have to suffer? Here’s how it goes.

For the choir director: A psalm of David.
O LORD, how long will you forget me? Forever? How long will you look the other way? How long must I struggle with anguish in my soul, with sorrow in my heart every day? How long will my enemy have the upper hand? Turn and answer me, O LORD my God! Restore the sparkle to my eyes, or I will die. Don’t let my enemies gloat, saying, “We have defeated him!” Don’t let them rejoice at my downfall. But I trust in your unfailing love.
I will rejoice because you have rescued me.
I will sing to the LORD because he is good to me.

(Psa 13:1-6)

Maybe these words express how you feel. The anguish of feeling let down by God in a most difficult time. Maybe you could use this Psalm as your prayer to tell God how you feel.
