For those who follow the church year, this coming Sunday is the last Sunday in the church year before we begin another cycle with the beginning of Advent. And the last Sunday of the church year points us to the significance of the story of Jesus – the baby child born at Christmas is not just anybody or a nobody but rather the King of everything. It’s true not everyone sees it that way, for many people Jesus is just a bloke who talked about loving others or just a myth told by the church. For those who believe, it is a reminder that our allegiance belongs not to human rulers or populist politicians but to God as revealed by the person of Jesus. The writer of Hebrews, a book in the Bible, reminds us that Jesus shows us what God is really like.
Long ago God spoke many times and in many ways to our ancestors through the prophets. And now in these final days, he has spoken to us through his Son. God promised everything to the Son as an inheritance, and through the Son he created the universe. The Son radiates God’s own glory and expresses the very character of God, and he sustains everything by the mighty power of his command. When he had cleansed us from our sins, he sat down in the place of honour at the right hand of the majestic God in heaven. (Heb 1:1-3)
